Pair of bills could limit access to cable television - 03/27/06 - The Detroit News
Municipal officials fear that means low-income areas will be bypassed and that cable companies eventually will stop serving unprofitable neighborhoods.
If you have a low income cable tv should be the least of your worries.
"These bills essentially come up with a discrimination strategy to pick between high-value people and low-value residents,"
How is this any different than there not being a Tiffany's in Compton? The last time I read the Bill of Rights there was nothing about a right to cable tv. Why would you try to sell expensive fibre optic tv and internet in a poor neighborhood where no one could afford it anyway? There is a reason you don't see many Rolls Royce dealerships in the projects. I would understand if, say, the electric company decided to stop selling power to poor areas but cable and internet are luxury items not a birth-right.
"It's going to rip apart communities because you're going to have neighborhoods right next to each other where one has competition and lower prices and the other with higher prices and no competition."
LOL another stooge out of touch with the real world. It is like that now, many cities don't allow competition. My cousin lives less than 5 miles from me and she gets no choice in tv or internet providers, while I have 2 very good cable choices plus satellite and DSL. This isn't our local governments looking out for us they are looking out for themselves. Currently there isn't much competition and people have few choices so even if AT&T does only go to the good areas that won't make it any worse for those who have no choice now. Lots of rural areas have no cable tv at all, you cant expect someone to spend millions of dollars of something that they will lose money on.
I am really getting sick of the attitude some people have that they are entitled to everything. All people are not equal, they are created equal but where you go from there determines what happens to you. You don't have money, you don't get cable. If you are fat, you don't get to be a swimsuit model. If you dropped out of school, you don't get to be a lawyer. I chose to get educated and work hard so I get better stuff that someone that chose not to, it's that simple.
